Your Ads Are Doing All the Selling

Why every customer costs more than the last, and why more ad spend won't fix it.

Clicks cost more every quarter. The discount code closes most of your sales. And the customers you paid for rarely come back on their own.

It's not your ads. Your ads are doing a job the brand should be doing.

The sameness tax

When a brand looks like everyone else in its category, it pays three times for every customer. It pays to be noticed, because nothing about it stands out on the shelf or in the feed. It pays to be chosen, usually with 20% off, because nothing else makes it the obvious pick. And it pays again to win the same person back, because nothing about the first purchase made them want to return.

We call it the sameness tax. Every brand in a crowded category pays some of it. The more you look like the rest, the more you pay, because price and spend are the only levers left.

Why more spend doesn't fix it

The usual response is more paid. But more paid sends more traffic to a page with nothing only you can say, so the cost per customer keeps climbing.

The other usual response is a new look. A new look on its own is the same brand in new clothes. The thinking under it was never done, so a quarter later the numbers look the same.

The problem sits underneath both. Nobody, sometimes not even the team, can say why you and not the brand next to you.

What a brand that sells looks like

A brand that does some of the selling gets bought on purpose. People pay full price, come back without being chased and bring their friends. Each customer costs less to win and is worth more once you have them.

Dip shows how. We never ran or changed Dip's ads. We repositioned the brand as the first home wellness brand, in a category full of clinical packaging that lived under the sink, and built the world around that position. We used this method to help Dip scale from £1m to £10m in 24 months.

Where to look first

Start with your category, not your ads. Map how every rival looks, what they say, how they sell and what they promise. Everywhere you match them is a place you're paying the tax.

Then ask the question your ads have been answering for you. Why you? If the honest answer is quality or price, the brand isn't selling yet.

The Brand World Score shows where your brand stops pulling its weight. Eight questions, two minutes, a score out of 10 and the exact point where your brand world breaks.
